How to add products to your Shopify store

Add products in Shopify admin. Each field does one of three jobs: findable, sellable, or shippable. With 2,048 variants per product, here's which to fill.

A desktop computer with a blank white screen sits on a white desk beside a cardboard box, clipboard, black pen, and handheld scanner.

The short answer: In your Shopify admin, go to Products → Add product and fill in the form. Treat every field as one of three jobs: making the item findable, sellable, or shippable. Products that look right in the form but fail in the store usually skipped one. This could be no collection assignment, a weight left at the 0.1 lb default, or a product that never went Active on a sales channel. Shopify raised the variant limit from 100 to 2,048 per product in 2025, so most option combinations no longer need separate listings. Work the form once with the three jobs as your checklist, and adding the next product is just running the same system.

Most people searching for this are not asking where the Add product button is. They want to know why products look wrong, don't appear in collections, or charge the wrong shipping rate. The three-job lens separates a product page that works from one that just has every field filled in.

Every field does one of three jobs

The product form has roughly 20 fields. Most beginners treat it as data entry: fill everything, hope for the best. That produces products that are unfindable, unappealing, or unshippable, and you won't know which until a customer complains.

Here is the core path:

  1. Go to Products → Add product in your Shopify admin.
  2. Write a title that names what the item is and what a shopper would search for.
  3. Add a description, a price, and at least one image.
  4. Set inventory tracking, weight, and the physical-product toggle.
  5. Assign the product to a collection and add tags.
  6. Set status to Active, choose sales channels, and save.

Every field on that form does one of three jobs. It makes the product findable (a shopper discovers it), sellable (a shopper who found it decides to buy), or shippable (the order survives fulfillment). If you cannot name a field's job, skip it. If you skip a field that does have a job, something breaks later.

Our How to use Shopify: a tour of the admin covers the full dashboard if you need broader orientation. This article stays on the product form.

Your three-job product checklist — copy this for each new product:

Findable:

  • Title names the product in searchable words. - Assigned to at least one collection. - Tags added for filtering. - Product type and product category both set. - SEO title 50 to 60 characters, meta description 150 to 160.

Sellable:

  • Price set; compare-at used only for genuine discounts. - At least one image at 2048×2048 with alt text. - Description covers benefits and key specs. - Variants configured for options sharing price and weight.

Shippable:

  • Physical-product toggle checked (or unchecked for digital). - Real weight entered, not the 0.1 lb default. - Dimensions set if carrier uses dimensional weight. - HS code and country of origin set for international shipping. - Track quantity checked and stock entered. - Status set to Active on the right sales channels.

Sellable fields: price, compare-at, images, and variants

These fields decide whether a shopper who found your product clicks Add to cart.

Price is obvious. Compare-at price is the crossed-out number that makes the price look like a discount. Set it only when the compare-at is genuinely higher than what you charge. A fake compare-at erodes trust the first time a shopper checks.

Images do the heavy lifting. Shopify's product media types documentation lists supported formats including images, 3D models, and videos. Upload at 2048×2048 pixels for square crops that hold detail on mobile. Add alt text to every image for accessibility and image-search indexing. Shopify's product media guide covers file-size limits and accepted formats in detail.

Variants are where most stores get the architecture wrong. Use variants when options differ (color, size, material) but price, weight, and description stay the same. Create separate products when price, weight, or care instructions differ between versions.

The variant limit used to force workarounds. Shopify raised it from 100 to 2,048 variants per product, according to Shopify's changelog, checked August 26, 2026. More than 6,500 app partners migrated to the new APIs, and creation time at the 2,048-variant limit improved by 10 times over the project, Shopify Inc. reported in 2025. Single-variant products are now 33% faster in the admin. The practical effect: a t-shirt in 8 colors and 5 sizes is one product with 40 variants, not 40 separate listings.

Findable fields: collections, tags, product type, and SEO

These fields decide whether anyone reaches your product at all.

The title carries the most weight. It should name the product in words a shopper would actually search. "Organic cotton t-shirt, navy" beats "Classic Tee 02." The URL handle auto-generates from the title, but you can edit it.

Collections group products for navigation and merchandising. Manual collections let you pick products by hand. Automated collections use conditions like product type, tag, or price range. The mismatch that makes products vanish: an automated collection set to "tag equals summer" excludes a product tagged "Summer" with a capital S, or one with no tag at all.

Tags are free-form labels for filtering and automated collections. They are not the same as product type or category. Products on the Advanced plan and below can have a maximum of 250 tags, Shopify announced in 2019, checked August 26, 2026. Most stores use 5 to 10 tags per product.

Product type is free text you define (e.g., "t-shirt"). Product category is a fixed taxonomy Shopify maintains. Choosing one helps Shopify apply the right tax rates and suggest relevant metafields. Set both.

The SEO fields sit at the bottom of the form. Shopify's SEO title tag guide recommends keeping titles between 50 and 60 characters to stay below the display limit. Google displays titles up to a maximum width of about 600 pixels, according to the same source, published in 2023. The meta description has no hard cap in Shopify, but 150 to 160 characters is the practical range before truncation.

Shippable fields: weight, dimensions, and the physical-product box

These fields decide whether an order survives fulfillment.

The physical-product toggle is the first one. Check it for anything you ship in a box. Uncheck it for digital goods, services, or anything delivered electronically. When unchecked, Shopify removes the weight and dimensions fields. For digital products, add a digital downloads app from the Shopify App Store to deliver the file after purchase.

Weight is the field that breaks carrier-calculated shipping. The default is 0.1 lb. Leaving it there means every shipping rate is calculated as if the product weighs 0.1 lb. A 4 lb candle shipped at 0.1 lb undercharges the customer, and you absorb the difference. Enter the real weight including packaging.

Dimensions (length, width, height) matter for carrier rates that use dimensional weight and for apps that calculate shipping-box size. Shopify's add and update products documentation lists these as optional but recommends them for accurate rates.

For international shipping, set the HS code and country of origin. Carriers and customs forms need both. The EU's Regulation (EU) 2023/988 on general product safety also requires certain product safety information for products sold to EU consumers, regardless of where the seller is based.

Track quantity is a checkbox that tells Shopify to count inventory. Check it and enter a stock number to prevent overselling. Uncheck it for made-to-order or unlimited-stock items. The product category you set earlier can also drive taxability, since Shopify uses the category to apply tax rules where it has them.

Draft vs Active: status, channels, and scheduled dates

A product that is findable, sellable, and shippable still sells nothing until it is Active on the right channels.

Draft means the product exists in your admin but is not visible to shoppers. Active means it is published. The status toggle sits at the top right of the product form. Below it, you choose which sales channels to publish to: online store, Shopify POS, Instagram, and others.

You can schedule a product to go live at a specific date and time. Set the status to Active, then use the scheduling option to pick a publish date. This is useful for product launches and timed drops. The product stays invisible until the scheduled moment.

Pre-orders use a different mechanism. Set the product to Active, then allow customers to purchase out-of-stock items by unchecking "stop selling when out of stock" in the inventory section. Make clear in the description that the item is a pre-order. Shopify's add variants documentation covers the inventory behavior for variants with this setting.

Before publishing, use the Preview button. It shows the product page as shoppers will see it, without making it live. Check that images load, the price displays correctly, and variants work.

How to add products in bulk: manual, CSV, or app

Three ways to get products into your admin. All three move the same fields around. None of them remove the three jobs.

Method Best for Effort per product Where the three jobs get done Most common failure
Manual form Catalogs under ~20 items 5 to 10 min All three jobs on one screen Weight left at default; never set to Active
CSV bulk import 50+ similar products 30 sec once template is set Same fields as columns; weight and SEO still manual Encoding errors; missing required columns
Import or dropshipping apps Dropshipping, print-on-demand 1 to 2 min to customize Supplier data covers sellable and shippable; findable is on you Imported titles and images are unoptimized for your store

Our take: Manual entry is the right default for your first 10 products because you learn which fields matter by touching each one. CSV import makes sense once you have a catalog structure you are happy with and need to scale it. Dropshipping apps save time on data entry but hand you a findability problem: the supplier's title and description were written for the supplier's store, not yours. Our call is that you should plan to rewrite at least the title, first image alt text, and description for every imported product, or your search and conversion will suffer.

The Shopify mobile app supports adding products with the same fields on a smaller screen. Barcode scanning speeds up SKU entry. You can also duplicate an existing product in the product list to save time on similar listings; edit the copy and only change what differs. Where adding products to Shopify goes wrong: three mistakes

Each of these is a skipped field category, not a bug.

Products sitting in Draft. The most common reason a product does not appear in the store is that it was never set to Active. The form saves as Draft by default. Check the status before you close the tab.

Products invisible in collections. An automated collection with a condition the product does not meet will quietly exclude it. A collection set to "product type equals t-shirt" misses a product whose type field says "T-shirt" or "tee." Check the condition, check the product's type and tags, and use the Preview button on the collection page to see what is included.

CSV imports that error on encoding or missing columns. Shopify's CSV template has a specific column order. Reorder columns, leave a required column blank, or save with the wrong encoding (anything other than UTF-8), and the import fails or creates broken products. Download a fresh sample CSV from Shopify's documentation each time, and do not reorder the columns.

Frequently asked questions

Can I schedule a product to go live at a specific date and time?

Yes. In the product form, set the status to Active and use the scheduling option to pick a publish date. The product remains invisible to shoppers until that date and time, which is useful for coordinated launches. You can change or remove the scheduled date at any time before it arrives.

How do I add product dimensions to my Shopify product?

Dimensions appear in the shipping section of the product form, but only when the physical-product toggle is checked. Enter them in the units your store uses (inches or centimeters, depending on your settings). Carriers that use dimensional weight need all three values to calculate accurate rates.

How do I set up a pre-order product in Shopify?

Set the product to Active and check "continue selling when out of stock" in the inventory section. Set quantity to zero or your pre-order allocation. Add a "pre-order" tag so you can filter these products into a dedicated collection. State the expected ship date in the description so the customer knows what they are buying.

Can I add the same product to multiple Shopify stores at once?

Shopify does not have a native multi-store product sync feature. Each store is a separate admin with its own catalog. To move a product between stores, export it as a CSV from one and import it to the other, or use a third-party sync app from the App Store.

What is the difference between product type and product category in Shopify?

Product type is a free-text field you define yourself (e.g., "t-shirt" or "candle"). Product category is a fixed taxonomy Shopify maintains and updates. Setting the product category tells Shopify which tax rates to apply and which metafields to suggest. Set both for every product.

How do I add a product manually from the Shopify mobile app?

Open the Shopify mobile app, tap Products, then tap the plus button. The form mirrors the desktop fields: title, description, price, images, variants, and shipping. You can scan a barcode to auto-fill the SKU field, and photos taken with your phone camera upload directly as product media.
