Shopify shipping rates: USPS, UPS and FedEx compared
USPS wins the default residential parcel on Shopify Shipping under 500 shipments a month; UPS and FedEx win heavier or commercial lanes on your account.
The short answer: For a Shopify store under 500 shipments a month, USPS is the default carrier. Shopify Shipping applies its discounted USPS rates to every US seller with no separate carrier account, according to Shopify's shipping documentation, checked September 12, 2026. UPS and FedEx win two situations mainly: parcels past a certain weight crossover, and commercial addresses, usually after you connect your own negotiated account. The 2026 backdrop rewards checking prices. USPS raised Ground Advantage about 7.8% on January 18, 2026, FedEx's general rate increase took effect January 5, 2026, and UPS refreshed its rate guides on September 7, 2026. The table below prices a 2-pound residential parcel to show where each carrier wins.
What we measured: We read most of the ranking pages for this search in full. We compared which rates, surcharges and account rules each page quotes, and how many dates its figures carry. Quoted prices vary widely across the analyzed pages, and a majority of the reviewed rankings recommend using multi-carrier rate-shopping software. Several providers name a weight crossover, clustering within a specific pound range. The weak point is obvious: pages quote retail rates from different weeks, and none prices Shopify's discounted path by volume.
Shipping is where a store's margin leaks first, and it leaks quietly. The plan price gets the attention; the label is a second bill that grows with every order. If you're earlier in the process, how to start a Shopify store covers setup, and what Shopify is covers the platform choice itself.
This page stays narrow on purpose: one store, a few hundred orders a month, residential-heavy, US-only. That's the profile where the carrier choice is an account decision before it is a rate decision. Disclosure: this article contains affiliate links to Shopify. You can see the built-in rates yourself on Shopify's shipping page, and the math below holds whether you're paying for a plan or still weighing if Shopify is free.

What Shopify Shipping discounts, and what only USPS gets by default
Start with the account line. Every US seller who buys labels through Shopify Shipping gets the discounted USPS rates with no carrier account of any kind, per Shopify's shipping documentation, checked September 12, 2026. That rate is the floor of this whole comparison.
UPS and FedEx work differently. Their built-in discounts run through Shopify's own carrier programs, they're narrower than the USPS discount, and the terms can move without much warning. In the merchant threads we read, the recurring complaint is that the UPS and FedEx discount line vanished from label pricing. Meanwhile, the USPS discount still showed, leaving labels costlier than the seller's own account. Print one test label a week and price it against any account you hold.
Shopify Shipping attaches to orders you already have; the catalog step itself is covered in how to add products to your Shopify store.
The rate table: USPS vs. UPS vs. FedEx on a 2-lb residential parcel
For a 2-pound residential parcel to Zone 4, the deciding numbers are the add-ons, not the base rate. Neither Shopify nor the carriers publish a single US "Shopify rate" you can verify from the outside, so the table compares the structure that actually decides a lane.
| Service | Residential surcharge | Fuel, week of Aug 10, 2026 | 2026 rate move | Speed | Account needed | When it wins (our call) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| USPS Ground Advantage | none | built into the rate | +~7.8% Jan 18, 2026 (USPS, 2025) | 2-5 business days | none; built-in rate | under ~5 lb residential, PO Boxes |
| UPS Ground Saver | ~$6.45-$6.95 band* | ~22-27% of base* | $5.00 per noncompliant label from Aug 2, 2026 (UPS, 2026) | 2-5 business days | your own account | sub-1-lb residential |
| UPS Ground | same band* | same* | guides updated Sept 7, 2026 (UPS, 2026) | 1-5 business days | your own negotiated account | 10 lb+, commercial |
| FedEx Ground / Home Delivery | same band* | same* | rate increase Jan 5, 2026 (FedEx, 2026) | 1-5 business days | built-in rate, or your account | the built-in dark horse; verify weekly |
*Bands as quoted across the 11 ranking pages we analyzed, not a live quote. The stack matters: a base rate can nearly double once a residential fee and ground fuel sit on top. USPS lists no residential surcharge because its rates already price it in.
Overnight is its own lane. UPS Next Day Air and FedEx's overnight services carry money-back delivery guarantees. USPS Priority Mail Express generally does not.
USPS raised Priority Mail about 6.6% and Express about 5.1% on January 18, 2026 (USPS, 2025). Tracking cuts the other way: UPS and FedEx scan parcels more often, while USPS scans can lag.
One thread result cuts against the standard advice. Two merchants we read report FedEx labels through Shopify's built-in rates running a dollar or two cheaper per package than UPS or USPS, which moved most of their volume. Treat the built-in FedEx rate as a live quote to check weekly, not a constant.
Our take: USPS is the default, and the table is why: no residential surcharge, no separate fuel line, no account to keep alive. We'd add UPS or FedEx only when real lanes, meaning commercial addresses or heavier parcels, show up weekly in the order data. Once a certain volume of monthly shipments with a B2B mix is reached, the negotiated account starts earning its keep.
Your 200-orders-a-month default: USPS Ground Advantage, with two exceptions
About 200 residential orders a month is the profile this page is built for, and the deciding number is the packed weight of your best seller. Under roughly 5 pounds, Ground Advantage at the built-in rate is the cheapest label on the table. Past the weight crossover, quote UPS Ground Saver on your own account before you default anywhere.
Two exceptions flip the answer. Commercial and multi-piece B2B lanes favor UPS Ground or FedEx Ground, where residential fees never apply. Some destinations are USPS-only regardless: PO Boxes and APO/FPO military addresses. Much of Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico sit outside the ~99% coverage UPS and FedEx advertise, with remote-area fees where they do reach.
Bulky light boxes carry their own trap: dimensional weight bills box size instead of scale weight, and it can flip the winner at any weight.
Our carrier decision checklist (suggested version):
- Under 500 shipments a month? Start with USPS Ground Advantage at the built-in rate.
- Best seller over 5 pounds packed? Quote UPS Ground Saver on your own account first.
- Weekly commercial or B2B lanes? Price UPS or FedEx Ground on your negotiated account.
- PO Box, APO/FPO, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico? USPS, full stop.
- October through January? Re-run the math monthly; peak fees move every line.
Every dollar here comes out of margin before the payout lands; how Shopify pays you covers the timing.
Connect your own UPS and FedEx accounts to Shopify checkout
Connect your own accounts the day your rate letter beats Shopify's built-in UPS and FedEx discounts; the deciding document is the pricing sheet your rep sends, not the feature list. The mechanics take minutes:
- In the admin (the full tour is in how to use Shopify), open Settings, then Shipping and delivery.
- Add a carrier account and pick UPS or FedEx.
- Enter your account number and rate details, then save.
- Set the zone to carrier-calculated rates so checkout shows your negotiated price.
- Buy one test label and price the same parcel through your old path; keep the cheaper account that week.
One FedEx gotcha from the threads we read: labels can print with two barcodes, a FedEx number and a USPS number. This happens because the rate is FedEx Ground Economy, which hands the last mile to USPS. Merchants say the fix is disabling Ground Economy in shipping settings. Nothing flags it first.
What you can really negotiate with UPS or FedEx under 500 shipments
Under 500 shipments a month, the deciding number is your weekly count times 52. Carriers publish their steepest tiers for shippers far above that line, which is why the threads leave the real threshold a guess. One answer we read proposed 50 boxes a day and admitted it was a guess. Ask instead for a written tier sheet: base discount per service, minimums, and how accessorials are treated. Retail tables are public (UPS, 2026), so what's negotiated is the multiplier off them. Then benchmark against USPS: if the negotiated rate doesn't beat the built-in Ground Advantage price on your five busiest lanes, don't sign. Note that UPS updated its Rate and Service Guides effective September 7, 2026 (UPS, 2026), so a discount signed in spring can be repriced by fall.
Peak surcharges and returns: when the cheaper carrier flips
Peak season is when the cheap carrier stops being cheap, and the dates are published, not rumored. FedEx will apply holiday-season Demand Surcharges to U.S. international services effective September 21, 2026 (FedEx, 2026). Fee creep shows elsewhere too. Effective September 7, 2026, UPS's Disbursement Fee becomes 2.5% of duties and taxes with a $17.50 minimum (UPS, 2026). FedEx raised its Disbursement Fee on July 20, 2026, to the greater of $17.50 or 2.5% (FedEx, 2026). Both hit cross-border orders.
Returns follow the same logic. Who pays is your policy, not the carrier's. A USPS return costs the customer nothing to drop off. A UPS or FedEx residential return carries the same residential and fuel add-ons as the outbound.
When to rate-shop outside Shopify Shipping
Bring in Shippo, ShipStation, Stamps.com or Pirate Ship when you sell on other channels. Or bring one in when a platform subscription costs less than the margin Shopify's rates give up on your lanes. Seven of the 11 guides we analyzed push exactly this move. It's the right instinct with one caveat: platforms resell discounted rates that beat Shopify's built-in prices on some lanes and lose on others. Run the same 2-pound Zone 4 parcel through both before you move volume, using the live rate calculators most platforms publish, on your five busiest lanes each month. If you'd rather stay inside the admin, price any shipping app's subscription honestly first; Shopify apps: what they actually cost you breaks down that math.
Frequently asked questions
Does Shopify's discounted rate apply to UPS and FedEx, or only USPS?
USPS is the built-in rate for every US seller. UPS and FedEx discounts exist through Shopify's programs but are narrower, and the threads we read show the discount line appearing and disappearing without notice. Buy the same label through both paths for one week and keep the receipts; the delta tells you which to default to.
Do I need a plan upgrade to show live carrier rates at checkout?
Merchants in one thread we read say Basic's carrier-calculated option already works with Shopify's own carrier accounts, while that thread's reading of the docs disagreed. We can't settle it from outside. Check the plan features on Shopify's pricing page, checked September 12, 2026, before paying for an upgrade.
Which carrier delivers to PO Boxes?
USPS, and only USPS, at any price. UPS and FedEx cannot deliver to a PO Box, and both charge remote or extended-area fees at the edges of their roughly 99% US coverage. If your customer list includes them, keep Ground Advantage rated as the fallback for those orders.
What volume do I need before FedEx beats USPS?
No published threshold exists, and the thread answers we read were guesses. Price your five busiest lanes at actual packed weight through Shopify's built-in rates and through any account you hold, then compare monthly. Under 500 shipments a month, USPS usually holds the residential lane.
Who pays for the return label on a Shopify order?
Your refund policy decides. Shopify can generate the return label, and you can deduct its cost from the refund, charge it at checkout, or absorb it. USPS returns are cheapest for customers, since any post office takes them free; UPS and FedEx residential returns carry the same add-ons as outbound.
